Water can keep moving after your hand stops. Can glitter reveal the hidden flow?
Public beta missionFollow the matching kit materials and the safety guidance on this page. Final production-kit validation is still in progress, so stop and ask a grown-up if your physical setup differs.
Optional · Try Another Angle
Your new skill: Extend a main-path idea without making the course longer.
Meet the parts
Match the names to your parts before you build. New parts appear when you first need them. You can point, say the name or show a grown-up.
Beaker or measuring cup
This container holds and mixes liquids. Its mL marks help us measure volume: how much liquid we use.
Spot it and try it
Look for: Find the scale and the mL label. One millilitre is a small unit of liquid volume.
Before using it: Put it flat, look at the water level from the side and use readable markings. Ask for a measuring cup if the kit marks are unclear.
Your turn: Point to the 10 mL line without adding powder.
Mixing stick
A mixing stick moves liquid and powder together so we can compare how mixing affects a result.
Spot it and try it
Look for: Find the clean stirrer named in the materials.
Before using it: Use a clean stick for each sample, or rinse and dry between samples. Never taste it.
Your turn: Rehearse a gentle stir in an empty container without splashing.
Glitter and beads
These visible particles help us follow movement or see what a filter catches.
Spot it and try it
Look for: Match the small glitter and larger beads named in the mission.
Before using it: Use only small amounts in a tray. Keep away from eyes and mouth; collect particles in the bin rather than washing them down the drain.
Your turn: Predict whether the same filter will catch a bead and every tiny glitter piece.
Ruler timer and evidence sheet
A ruler measures distance. A timer measures elapsed time. Your paper records a prediction and result so you can compare tests.
Spot it and try it
Look for: Find the cm marks or the timer display and a place to draw or write.
Before using it: Use the same start point and method each time. You can say, point or draw your evidence instead of writing long answers.
Your turn: Choose the mark where the first measurement will begin.

Kit list: match the named parts to your box and its component cards. Home list: gather these before starting; some may also be supplied in your kit. Reuse components between missions. Stop and ask a grown-up if an essential part or label is missing.
BEFORE YOU BUILD
Keep glitter away from eyes and mouth. Stir gently so water stays inside the beaker.
YOUR REWARD
+70 XPMission completion
PREDICT BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Will glitter near the centre move faster, slower or the same as glitter near the edge?
YOUR CHALLENGE
Create a controlled swirl and describe how glitter moves at the centre and edges.
NEW POWER-UP
Use tracer particles to reveal a vortex and measure how movement changes.
You have practised careful comparison. Now you will observe motion over time.

WHAT'S REALLY HAPPENING?
Why it works
The stick transfers motion to the water. The moving liquid carries glitter, so the particles act as tracers that make flow patterns visible. Friction gradually slows the water.
Scientists use dyes, particles and bubbles to study flow in rivers, machines, weather models and the human body.
FAIR-TEST CHALLENGE
Compare five stirs and ten stirs. Use the same beaker, water amount, glitter amount and stirring direction.
WHEN IT DOESN'T WORK YET
Check the evidence before changing the setup.
WHAT YOU SEE
LIKELY REASON
TRY THIS FIRST The glitter sinks immediately The glitter may be too heavy or too much was added.
Use a smaller pinch of the supplied light glitter.
Water splashes out The stirring is too fast or the beaker is too full.
Use less water and slower circles.
No clear pattern appears The stirring direction may have changed.
Stir in one direction with smooth full circles.
CLEAN, RESET AND STORE
Pour water through the supplied separator or into the sink as instructed by the adult. Collect visible glitter where possible. Rinse and dry the beaker.
NEXT SKILL
Next you will disturb the surface of water with one tiny touch of soap.
