OPTIONAL CHALLENGE 04 · CHEMISTRY DISCOVERY

Foam Face-Off

Jump to the build step

Does three times the soap create three times the foam?

Public beta missionFollow the matching kit materials and the safety guidance on this page. Final production-kit validation is still in progress, so stop and ask a grown-up if your physical setup differs.

Optional · Try Another Angle

Your new skill: Extend a main-path idea without making the course longer.

Meet the parts

Match the names to your parts before you build. New parts appear when you first need them. You can point, say the name or show a grown-up.

Beaker or measuring cup

This container holds and mixes liquids. Its mL marks help us measure volume: how much liquid we use.

Spot it and try it

Look for: Find the scale and the mL label. One millilitre is a small unit of liquid volume.

Before using it: Put it flat, look at the water level from the side and use readable markings. Ask for a measuring cup if the kit marks are unclear.

Your turn: Point to the 10 mL line without adding powder.

Mixing stick

A mixing stick moves liquid and powder together so we can compare how mixing affects a result.

Spot it and try it

Look for: Find the clean stirrer named in the materials.

Before using it: Use a clean stick for each sample, or rinse and dry between samples. Never taste it.

Your turn: Rehearse a gentle stir in an empty container without splashing.

Dish soap

A little dish soap changes how the surface of water behaves and can help trap bubbles as foam.

Spot it and try it

Look for: Use ordinary dish soap named by the mission, from home.

Before using it: Use tiny amounts only, keep away from eyes and do not substitute bleach or cleaning chemicals.

Your turn: Predict whether plain water and soapy water will behave the same.

Ruler timer and evidence sheet

A ruler measures distance. A timer measures elapsed time. Your paper records a prediction and result so you can compare tests.

Spot it and try it

Look for: Find the cm marks or the timer display and a place to draw or write.

Before using it: Use the same start point and method each time. You can say, point or draw your evidence instead of writing long answers.

Your turn: Choose the mark where the first measurement will begin.

Meet the parts for Foam Face-Off

A video demonstration will appear here when it is ready. You can follow the written step now.

WHAT YOU'LL USE

Match these to your kit

Gather from home

Timer

Kit list: match the named parts to your box and its component cards. Home list: gather these before starting; some may also be supplied in your kit. Reuse components between missions. Stop and ask a grown-up if an essential part or label is missing.

BEFORE YOU BUILD

Keep soap away from eyes. Stir gently. Grown-up move: Help match the stirring speed and path.

PREDICT BEFORE YOU BEGIN

What do you think will happen? Say it, point to it or draw it. Then test your idea.

WHAT'S REALLY HAPPENING?

Why it works

More soap can help bubbles last, but foam also depends on mixing, bubble size and container shape. The relationship is not always three-to-one.

CLEAN, RESET AND STORE

Ask your grown-up to follow the supplied disposal instructions. Keep glitter and solid pieces out of drains. Clean the tray, wash your hands and store labelled materials away from younger children.
